BOSTON: A SPECTACLES SERIES

For Lens Fest 2021, Snap Inc. asked me to pair up with Hashtag Our Stories to explore the future of travel using the Next Generation Spectacles. I expanded on the New Mexico series, working with historic images of Boston from the Library of Congress, and legendary marathon runner Kathrine Switzer. The series explores the tension between the historic and contemporary - the people who used to live in a place, the people who are there now. Historic cameras and photography methods, versus emerging technologies and new ways of recording our experiences. Moments that have passed, and the moment you’re currently in.

LENS 1: KATHRINE SWITZER

For the first lens in the series, Yusuf Omar from Hashtag Our Stories and I had the chance to interview Katherine Switzer, the first woman to officially register and run the Boston marathon. You can stand on the site in Framingham where race officials tackled her and tried to rip her bib number from her body, and listen to Kathrine tell the story in her own words as the scene unfolds around you using photos taken on the day. You end the experience by following Kathrine over the finish line.

LENS 2 & 3 : BOSTON COMMON AND QUINCY MARKET

For the last two lenses of the series, using historic photos of Boston from the Library of Congress Archives, you are able to walk back in time and walk through the scenes in the photos. While traversing the scenes, you hear original poems composed by Boston Youth Poet Kevin Gu. The two scenes are located at the Boston Common, and Quincy Market.
